Sensory Integration Therapy

Helping children make sense of the world — processing touch, movement, sound, and sensation in a way that supports learning, behaviour, and daily life.

About This Service

What is Sensory Integration Therapy?

Sensory Integration (SI) Therapy addresses how the brain processes sensory information from the body and environment. Some children are over-sensitive (hypersensitive) to sensory input, while others are under-sensitive (hyposensitive) and seek intense stimulation. Both can significantly affect behaviour, learning, and daily function.

"When sensory processing improves, everything improves — behaviour, attention, learning, sleep, and emotional regulation all become easier."

Our SI therapy uses specialised play equipment and structured activities to provide the right kind of sensory input — helping the brain learn to organise and respond to sensory information more effectively. Sessions are always led by the child's nervous system responses.

Outcomes

Benefits of SI Therapy

1
Better Behaviour

When sensory needs are met, challenging behaviours linked to sensory overwhelm decrease dramatically.

2
Improved Attention

A regulated nervous system is better able to focus, sit, and learn in classroom environments.

3
Greater Comfort

Children become less distressed by textures, noise, crowds, and sensory environments.

4
Better Sleep

Many children with sensory issues have disrupted sleep — SI therapy often improves sleep quality significantly.

5
More Confident Eating

Children with tactile or taste sensitivity expand their food acceptance — reducing mealtime battles.

6
Social Participation

Children can access playgrounds, parties, and school environments without sensory meltdowns.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my child has sensory processing issues?+
Signs include extreme reactions to textures or clothing, covering ears frequently, avoiding playgrounds, extreme food selectivity, clumsiness, or constantly seeking intense physical input. A sensory assessment can clarify this.
Is SPD a recognised diagnosis?+
Sensory Processing Disorder is a clinical condition recognised by occupational therapists, though it is not yet in diagnostic manuals as a standalone diagnosis. It is commonly seen alongside autism, ADHD, and developmental delays.
How long does SI therapy take?+
Most children benefit from 3–6 months of weekly SI therapy, combined with a daily sensory diet at home. Some children need longer-term support.
Can I do sensory activities at home?+
Yes! We will provide you with a personalised sensory diet — a list of activities tailored to your child's profile that can be done at home with everyday materials.
Can sensory therapy help with sleep?+
Yes. Many children with sensory dysregulation have disrupted sleep patterns. A well-designed sensory diet — particularly heavy work and calming input before bed — can significantly improve sleep.
